THE NEXT THREE WEEKS were busy. Mallory had spent her first Christmas with Ethan and his family, and was everything she’d ever dreamed of. They’d sipped eggnog by the fire—just a little sip for her—and laughed over dinner. There was a roast turkey, cranberry glazed ham, green beans, and creamy mashed potatoes. Mallory had even brought a homemade gingerbread trifle. Her heart was filled with the Christmas spirit and she felt a glow from within.

After Christmas, Mallory and Ethan—with the help of Jenna and her friends Amy and Charlotte—planned a wedding.

“Okay, so guys listen up!” Charlotte leaned forward making sure she had everyone’s attention. As the owner of the Strawberry Fare cafe—only the town’s best cafe—Charlotte volunteered to cater the wedding. “We’ve got the food all sorted. Next up, we need to decide on your wedding cake.”

“Oooh!” Jenna squealed and hugged Mallory as they sat side-by-side at the cafe. “This is so exciting!”

“It’s just a cake.” Mallory tried her best to downplay the event. All she wanted was a low-key wedding—simple and uncomplicated. From the moment Ethan had asked her to marry him, Mallory played the guest of honor in her very own pity party. “Just a cake?” Charlotte gasped. “Oh no, no, no, missy! You’ve got it all wrong.” She wagged a finger at Mallory. “This cake is going to be the star of your wedding!”

“I thought the bride was meant to be the star of the wedding?” Amy joked. She reached across the table and placed a hand over Mallory’s. “Don’t let these two bulldoze you into having their dream weddings. They’ve already had their turn! Remember, it’s your special day.”

“But seriously, we can’t afford a big wedding,” Mallory said.

“Who said anything about money?” Charlotte blurted. “This is my gift to you two!”

“And we’re sponsoring the venue,” Amy added.

“And like I told you, sis”—Jenna placed a hand over Mallory’s—“we’re taking care of all the outfits.”

Mallory couldn’t believe how amazing and generous they all were being to her. Apart from Jenna, Mallory wasn’t sure if the others knew about her secret or not. And if they did, they didn’t show it. A wave of emotion surged through her and before she knew it, Mallory was a blubbering mess of tears.

“Right—you guys have done it!” Amy scolded Jenna and Charlotte.

“No, no... it’s not that.” Mallory let a small laugh out and wiped her tears away with her fingers.

“Here,” Charlotte passed her a tissue. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—”

“Thanks,”—Mallory took the tissue—“it’s me. I’m just being emotional. It’s these darned hormones!”

“Oh my goodness, yes I totally get you. I was the same when I was pregnant with the twins,” Charlotte said.

“Me too—when I was pregnant with Macy. With Rory, though, I was so irritable!”

Mallory took the tissue to her nose.

“Uh-oh!” Jenna held her hands up. “Everybody, hold on to your hats! When Mallory blows that honker of hers, we’ve reached the point of no return.”

Mallory laughed and blew her nose into the tissue.

They all laughed, and Jenna pulled her into an embrace.
